Nuance recently unveiled the next generation of its voice biometrics platform. We already know that voice recognition allows for great time-savings in a person’s work or homelike (see Dragon NaturallySpeaking, but Nuance also provides what could be known as the password of the future. By use of natural voice patterns, voice biometrics provide a more secure, effortless authentication process in customer service environments, and will also allow for superior fraud detection.
In a press release, Nuance points out the fact that 85% of people are currently dissatisfied with current authentication methods, for example having to remember multiple PINs, passwords and security questions.
Will your voice be the password of the future?
Many are now asking whether a simple voice command will be the passwords of the future. So far, Nuance is seeing a great interest in its voice biometrics solution, and companies like Barclays, Vanguard and Eastern Bank are already turning to Nuance to utilize voice biometrics as part of their customer service system.
So how does it work? Well, using just a simple passphrase, such as “My voice is my password”, voice biometrics allows for secure authentication of customers when they connect with a service provide via e.g. a call center, a mobile app, or the Internet. In addition to a new level of fraud protection and eliminating the need for remembering passwords, voice biometrics also allows for substantial time and cost savings.
Robert Weideman, general manager and executive vice president, at Nuance, says:
The acceptance of voice biometrics is accelerating, and has become one of the hottest areas of our business. […] In just the past two years, the total number of consumers who have enrolled voiceprints with banks, mobile providers and other organizations has tripled – from 10 million to 30 million. Organizations recognize that by providing the natural voice interface and high level of security that voice biometrics affords – right at the point of authentication – they can deliver a much more compelling experience to their consumers, with enhanced security.
